Children were left in tears after an ultra-rare albino squirrel - said to be one of just 25 in the country - was mown down.
Locals have voiced their heartbreak following the animal's demise in Edinburgh.
The distinctive squirrel was well known in the area, The Scotsman reports.
But albino squirrels are believed to have sight and hearing problems, which can make them vulnerable to hazards.
One local told The Scotsman: "Our white squirrels have become quite famous, and people are always amazed to see them.
"It’s heartbreaking that one of them has met its end in this way. My children were in tears."
It is thought there are just 25 albino squirrels in the country, with the odds of being born albino around one in 100,000.
Gene mutations affect the animals' pigmentation, as albinos lack melanin.
