The International School of Nice (ISN) is proud to reaffirm its unwavering commitment to sustainable development by actively participating in the Nice Climate Summit 2024. This critical event, taking place on September 26 and 27 at the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice, is a global platform in the fight against climate change.

With the backing of esteemed partners like La Tribune, Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur, Région Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and the City of Nice, ISN is set to play a pivotal role in addressing the urgent environmental challenges of our time. The summit will gather experts, politicians, scientists, business leaders, and committed citizens from around the world to exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions to protect our seas and oceans. This event promises to be a crucial moment in the pursuit of sustainable solutions for marine ecosystems.

At ISN, sustainability isn't merely a concept—it's deeply ingrained in our vision as guardians of the oceans. Since 2022, our Model United Nations (MUN), Global Politics (GP), and Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) students have fervently embraced the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ), recognizing their pivotal importance for our global community. ISN students have actively engaged in their communities, advocating for Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (SDG target 4.7).

They are dedicated to ensuring that every learner acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to advance sustainable development, including promoting human rights, gender equality, global citizenship, and fostering an appreciation for cultural diversity and its role in sustainable development. They acknowledge the vital role of women and gender equality (SDG 5) in combating climate change and safeguarding ocean ecosystems (SDG 14), while also fostering partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 17).

ISN is a proud member of Globeducate, who has developed a Global Agenda and formed partnerships with internationally recognised change-makers, with the aim of fulfilling their mission to address the United Nations´ Sustainable Development Goals.

The Nice Climate Summit 2024 presents a wonderful opportunity for ISN to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education (SDG 4) and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. This event is key to opening a world of opportunities, making it possible for each of us to contribute to a progressive, healthy society.
Melanie Laroche, ISN HoD Science and Eco school and Sustainable development coordinator, adds, “Participating in the Nice Climate Summit is essential for IBDP Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) program to stay updated with the latest climate research, innovations, and policies. This enriches our curriculum, helps students understand the real-world application of their studies, and connects us with global experts, providing valuable resources. The summit's focus on critical ocean issues aligns with our eco-school's commitment to environmental responsibility, promoting community involvement in ocean conservation”.
The path to sustainability and global citizenship is a collective journey that demands our unified efforts. As ISN director, Mel Curtis aptly states, “Schools cannot be left alone in this mission. It is a societal endeavour that calls for the active participation of media, businesses, leaders, and every individual. To truly succeed, we must embrace inclusive participation, engaging people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds, and build strong partnerships to magnify our impact”.
Sergio Galvis, ISN HoD and MUN Coordinator, reiterates, “Incorporating the voices of youth is a crucial step toward achieving sustainability. At ISN Nice, we are privileged to have incredibly engaged and environmentally aware students. From a young age, these students are strongly motivated to make a difference in creating a sustainable world. The young adults at ISN Nice effectively connect their local community's concerns with pressing global issues, recognizing their capacity to utilize available tools to achieve sustainability goals. Their participation in the Nice Climate Summit is vital for our community. They bring invaluable perspectives on gender equality, youth engagement in marine ecosystem preservation, and innovative approaches to addressing climate change. Listening to their voices enriches our collective efforts and highlights the importance of inclusivity in the journey toward a sustainable future.”
ISN eagerly anticipates the program for the Nice Climate Summit 2024 and hopes to see young ocean defenders involved and women equally represented at this pivotal event. Ensuring women's participation in climate negotiations, particularly in efforts to protect our seas and oceans, is essential for developing effective and sustainable policies. Together, we can create a world where every voice is heard, and every perspective contributes to the health of our environment. Let's unite for a future where inclusivity drives our actions and strengthens our commitment to safeguarding our planet.
